Includes letters (1840s-60s) to Sarah Carter, of Foxcroft, Me., discussing family life, slavery, politics, and other topics, from James Holmes, who emigrated to the Midwest, and his sisters, Sarah Evans (Holmes) Clark and Marcella Fayette Holmes, both teachers who emigrated to Madison and Augusta, Ga.; letters from James Edward "Ned" Holmes relating to his Civil War service with the Union Army in Virginia, including descriptions of camp life, battle, and opinions of officers; Civil War letters from Union soldier Ulrich Lee, of Maine; letters by and about Capt.
